El presente artículo analiza el paradigma de la sociedad civil en el contexto de democracias desconfiguradas. Las nuevas realidades del sistema político desafían muchos supuestos de la teoría de la sociedad civil desde que el concepto se convirtió en piedra angular de una teoría crítica de la democratización que desafió el paradigma dominante del elitismo democrático. Esta comprensión de la sociedad civil obligó a reevaluar la visión meramente electoral de la democracia y enfatizar el papel crucial que la misma cumple en el funcionamiento y legitimación de sus instituciones. En este contexto se describen algunos desarrollos de dicha teoría para indagar en qué medida el modelo propuesto de la sociedad civil y de esfera pública se mantiene vigente o necesita una revisión sustantiva.
